Clinical Profile

Dr Christopher Yu is a cardiologist at One Heart Centre in North Sydney, with subspecialty training in cardio-oncology and advanced multimodality cardiac imaging. He is a cardiologist at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, North Shore Private and Mater Hospitals and an Honorary VMO at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and a Visiting Scientist at the Heart Research Institute. He returned to Sydney in 2026 after three years at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital, where he was a cardio-oncology fellow and then Assistant Professor and staff cardiologist at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital (ranked second best hospital in the world by Newsweek) and University of Toronto.

Advanced multimodality cardiac imaging

This includes echocardiography, cardiac MRI and CT coronary angiography. With this subspeciality knowledge, Dr Yu is able to determine the choice of test can be matched to our clinical question to achieve a diagnosis faster or optimise your cardiovascular risk stratification. Dr Yu has Testamur, Examination of Special Competence in Adult Echocardiography (National Board of Echocardiography, USA), Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (RANZCR) CT coronary angiography accreditation and subspeciality training in cardiac MRI.

Cardio-oncology: heart care before, during and after cancer treatment

Cancer treatment has improved enormously, and more people now live for many years afterwards. Some chemotherapies, targeted therapies and immunotherapies can affect the heart — causing heart failure, rhythm disturbance, pericardial disease or accelerated coronary disease — and people who already have a heart condition may need careful planning so that cancer treatment can go ahead safely. Dr Yu is certified in cardio-oncology by the International Cardio-Oncology Society (FICOS) and completed a dedicated cardio-oncology fellowship at Toronto General Hospital. He co-chairs the Society’s Cardiac Imaging Working Group, sits on the European Society of Cardiology Council of Cardio-Oncology’s Group on Diagnostics, and is on the editorial board of the European Heart Journal: Cardio-Oncology.
GPs, oncologists and haematologists can refer for:
• Assessment before cancer treatment begins, particularly where there is existing heart disease, prior cardiac risk, or a higher-risk treatment regimen
• Monitoring during treatment, using advanced cardiac imaging and potentially blood biomarkers to detect changes before they become symptomatic
• Cancer survivorship, including long-term surveillance as many people finish cancer treatment and are never reviewed again for its cardiovascular effects, even though cardiovascular disease becomes a leading cause of illness in long-term survivors.

General Cardiology

Beyond his subspecialty areas, Dr Yu sees the full range of adult cardiac problems — chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart failure and valve disease — and accepts referrals for preventive cardiology and cardiovascular risk assessment.

Dr Yu works closely with referring GPs and specialists to provide a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach to manage patients’ cardiovascular issues so that they understand their diagnosis and are empowered to make informed decisions regarding their cardiovascular health.

Education & Training

Dr Yu completed his medical degree at Imperial College, London, UK and completed physician and cardiology training in the Sydney Local Health District (Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and Concord Hospitals). He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2020.

Dr Yu completed his PhD at the University of Sydney, with doctoral research focused on advanced cardiac imaging in cardio-oncology, supported by a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and National Breast Cancer Foundation Postgraduate Scholarships. Following the completion of his PhD, he undertook a Cardiology Fellowship at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital, Canada. His fellowship was supported by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR), where he ranked first nationally for the Fellowship Award. He subsequently became a staff cardiologist and assistant professor at Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital, Canada.

He holds Fellowship of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (FCSANZ), American College of Cardiology (FACC) and International Cardio-Oncology Society (FICOS) as well as obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) UK.

Research

Dr Yu’s research is focused in cardio-oncology and using artificial intelligence to improve cardiovascular care for patients in rural and remote areas. His achievements to date in include securing >$4m in national and international research funding, >40 peer reviewed publications and chapters in key cardiology textbooks.
