Clinical Profile

Dr Chinmay Khandkar is a Consultant Cardiologist and Interventional Cardiology Fellow with a special interest in coronary artery disease, coronary physiology, and preventive cardiology. He completed his Doctor of Medicine (with Distinction) at the University of New South Wales, and holds a Master of Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology) from the University of Sydney. He attained his FRACP after completing his cardiology training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He has completed the American Society of Echocardiography of National Board Certification Examination. He also serves as a Clinical Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney.

Dr Khandkar brings a holistic and evidence-based approach to cardiac care, integrating the latest research findings with compassionate, patient-centred practice. He is actively involved in translational research, to improve the diagnosis and management of patients with non-obstructive coronary artery disease. He also holds a Clinical Associate Lecturer appointment at the University of Sydney, where he contributes to medical education across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and is a sought-after speaker on topics spanning coronary physiology, inflammation, and preventive cardiovascular medicine.

Education & Training

Dr Khandkar completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Doctor of Medicine with distinction at the University of New South Wales, before undertaking a Master of Medicine in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Sydney. He subsequently completed his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, and holds board certification in Echocardiography from the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE).

Dr Khandkar is currently completing a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sydney as both an NHMRC Scholar and Heart Foundation Scholar, alongside a Research and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Concord Repatriation General Hospital, Sydney.

Research

Dr Khandkar’s research sits at the intersection of invasive coronary physiology, intravascular imainging, machine learning, and translational cardiovascular medicine. His PhD focuses novel diagnostic modalities in interventional cardiology, especially in MINOCA and INOCA cohorts.

He serves as a lead investigator on the SCORE-CUT DCB Trial (ACTRN12625001349437), a multi-centre randomised controlled trial evaluating drug-coated balloon technology for coronary lesion preparation. He also leads the DETECT-MINOCA study (ACTRN12625000540415), which assess novel diagnostic models in these patients. His broader research interests span coronary physiology, preventive cardiology, and intravascular imaging-guided intervention.

As a Clinical Associate Lecturer at the University of Sydney, Dr Khandkar contributes to medical teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with a particular emphasis on cardiovascular physiology, and evidence-based practice.
