Tilt Table Test
Specialised tilt table testing for unexplained fainting, dizziness and syncope — diagnosing vasovagal syncope and postural hypotension.
What is It?
A Tilt Table Test is a specialised, non-invasive assessment used to evaluate how your blood pressure and heart rate respond to changes in body position. It is most commonly used to investigate unexplained fainting (syncope), recurrent dizziness or persistent lightheadedness.
At One Heart Centre, our cardiologists use tilt table testing to determine whether your symptoms are related to reflex responses of the autonomic nervous system that affect heart rate and blood pressure regulation.
Why is It Performed?
At One Heart Centre, our cardiologists may recommend a Tilt Table Test to:
- Investigate unexplained fainting or near-fainting episodes
- Assess recurrent dizziness or persistent lightheadedness
- Diagnose conditions such as vasovagal syncope or postural (orthostatic) hypotension
- Evaluate abnormal heart rate or blood pressure responses to standing
- Guide appropriate treatment and lifestyle management recommendations
This test provides valuable diagnostic information when routine cardiac tests are normal but symptoms persist.
What Does the Test Involve?
You will lie comfortably on a special motorised table with secure safety supports in place. Monitoring equipment is attached to continuously record your heart rate, blood pressure and ECG throughout the test.
The table is slowly tilted from a flat (lying) position to a near-upright position, simulating the effects of standing. You remain in this position while your body’s cardiovascular response is carefully observed. In some cases, medication may be administered to help reproduce symptoms in a controlled and safe environment.
You may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea or a brief fainting episode during the test — this is closely monitored by trained clinical staff and resolves quickly once the table is returned to a flat position. The test usually takes 30–60 minutes, and you can typically go home shortly afterwards.
What are the Benefits?
- Helps identify the underlying cause of unexplained fainting and dizziness
- Provides clear, definitive diagnosis for posture-related cardiovascular symptoms
- Guides personalised treatment and practical safety advice
- Non-invasive, safe and carefully supervised throughout
- Leads to improved symptom control and quality of life
