CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA)

Advanced non-invasive CT heart imaging to detect coronary artery blockages — detailed coronary angiography without a catheter.

What is It?

A CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA) is a state-of-the-art, non-invasive imaging test that produces highly detailed pictures of the coronary arteries — the blood vessels that supply your heart muscle. It allows your cardiologist to assess for any narrowing, blockages or plaque build-up that may increase your risk of heart attack.
At One Heart Centre, our cardiologists have expert training in interpreting CT coronary angiography, ensuring you receive accurate diagnosis and a clear pathway to treatment. This test uses advanced CT technology and contrast dye to visualise your heart with exceptional clarity.

Why is It Performed?

At One Heart Centre, our cardiologists may recommend a CTCA to:

  • Investigate chest pain, tightness or unexplained shortness of breath
  • Assess for coronary artery disease in a non-invasive way
  • Evaluate cardiovascular risk in selected patients
  • Provide reassurance when symptoms remain unexplained
  • Guide further treatment or testing if needed

CTCA is especially valuable for patients at low to moderate risk, where a precise, non-invasive assessment can often replace the need for invasive procedures.

What Does the Test Involve?

Before the scan, your heart rate may be gently slowed with medication to optimise image quality. A small cannula is placed in your arm so that contrast dye can be administered during the scan.

You will lie comfortably on the CT scanner bed as images of your heart are captured. The scanner does not enclose you, and the test itself takes only a few minutes. You may feel a brief warm sensation when the contrast is injected — this is entirely normal and passes quickly.

The procedure is painless and typically completed within 30–45 minutes, including preparation. Afterwards, you can resume your normal activities immediately in most cases.

What are the Benefits?

  • Accurate, non-invasive assessment of coronary artery disease
  • Early detection of plaque build-up and arterial narrowing
  • Avoidance of invasive catheter angiography in many patients
  • Rapid, reliable diagnosis and peace of mind
  • Enhanced ability to tailor your individual treatment plan
