Coronary Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)

Advanced intravascular ultrasound imaging from inside the coronary arteries — guiding precise stent placement and coronary disease assessment.

What is It?

Coronary Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) is an advanced imaging technique performed during a coronary angiogram to obtain highly detailed, real-time images from inside the coronary arteries. Unlike standard angiography, which shows only the outline of the artery, IVUS allows direct visualisation of the artery wall, plaque composition and vessel structure.

At One Heart Centre, our interventional cardiologists use IVUS to achieve the highest level of diagnostic precision and to optimise the safety and success of coronary stent procedures.

Why is It Performed?

At One Heart Centre, our cardiologists may use IVUS to:

  • Accurately assess the severity and characteristics of coronary artery blockages
  • Guide precise placement, sizing and optimisation of coronary stents
  • Confirm optimal stent expansion, apposition and positioning
  • Clarify uncertain or ambiguous angiogram findings
  • Improve the long-term safety and durability of angioplasty procedures

IVUS is especially valuable in complex coronary artery disease and when the most precise assessment and treatment is required.

What Does the Test Involve?

IVUS is performed as part of a standard coronary angiogram or angioplasty procedure. After the catheter is positioned in the coronary artery, a miniaturised ultrasound probe mounted on a thin wire is gently advanced inside the artery.

The probe uses sound waves to create detailed cross-sectional images of the artery from the inside, providing information that cannot be seen on standard angiography. This process is painless and adds only a few extra minutes to the overall procedure. You remain closely monitored throughout.

You will not feel the ultrasound imaging itself. Most patients experience only the usual sensations associated with angiography, such as a brief warm feeling from contrast dye.

What are the Benefits?

  • Exceptionally detailed assessment of coronary artery disease from within the vessel
  • Superior diagnostic accuracy compared with angiography alone
  • Improved precision, safety and long-term success of stent placement
  • Reduced risk of stent-related complications
  • Evidence-based, personalised coronary treatment decisions
