Cardiac MRI (Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
Comprehensive cardiac MRI for detailed heart muscle, valve and function assessment — advanced heart imaging without radiation.
What is It?
Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Cardiac MRI) is a highly detailed, non-invasive scan that uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to create precise images of the heart. It provides exceptional information about heart structure, function, muscle health and blood flow — all without using any radiation.
At One Heart Centre, our cardiologists regard Cardiac MRI as one of the most comprehensive diagnostic tools available for evaluating a wide range of heart conditions.
Why is It Performed?
At One Heart Centre, our cardiologists may recommend a Cardiac MRI to:
- Assess heart muscle diseases (cardiomyopathies)
- Evaluate heart failure and reduced heart function
- Detect inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis)
- Assess scarring or damage following a heart attack
- Investigate congenital (present from birth) heart conditions
- Clarify uncertain findings from other cardiac tests
- Guide treatment decisions and long-term management planning
Cardiac MRI is especially valuable when detailed tissue characterisation of the heart muscle is needed for accurate diagnosis and prognosis.
What Does the Test Involve?
You will lie comfortably on a padded table that gently moves into the MRI scanner — a well-lit, open-ended tunnel. During the scan, you will hear rhythmic tapping or knocking sounds; this is completely normal, and ear protection is provided for your comfort.
In some cases, a contrast agent is injected through a small cannula in your arm to enhance the images. The contrast used for Cardiac MRI is very safe and different from CT contrast dye.
You will be asked to lie still and occasionally hold your breath for short periods while images are acquired. The scan is painless and typically takes 30–60 minutes. You can usually return home immediately afterwards and resume your normal activities.
What are the Benefits?
- Exceptional detail of heart structure, function and muscle health
- No radiation exposure whatsoever
- Accurate assessment of inflammation, scarring and cardiomyopathy
- Early detection of conditions that may not be visible on other tests
- Precise guidance for treatment planning and long-term prognosis
