One Heart Centre Welcomes Dr Christopher Yu to the Team

Welcome Dr Christopher Yu

One Heart Centre is pleased to welcome Dr Christopher Yu, who has returned to Sydney from Canada and is now consulting at our North Sydney rooms.

Dr Yu is a consultant cardiologist with subspecialty training in two areas: Advanced multimodality cardiac imaging and cardio-oncology. He also holds appointments at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Mater Hospital, North Shore Private Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

Where he has come from

Dr Yu qualified in medicine at Imperial College, London, UK then completed physician and cardiology training in the United Kingdom and Sydney. He was awarded his NHMRC and National Breast Cancer Foundation funded PhD by the University of Sydney for work on the State of Cardio-oncology in Australia and the Application of Advanced Cardiac Imaging.

He then spent three years in Canada, first as a cardio-oncology fellow and then as Assistant Professor and staff cardiologist at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, Toronto General Hospital — ranked second in the world in Newsweek’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026 — before coming home to Sydney this year.

Along the way he was a cardiologist at Dubbo Base Hospital and a remote Aboriginal clinic in Walgett, New South Wales — an experience that still shapes his research, much of which is aimed at bringing accurate cardiac diagnosis to people who live a long way from a specialist.

Cardio-oncology: the heart before, during and after cancer treatment

Cancer treatment has improved enormously, and more people are living for many years after it. Some chemotherapies, targeted therapies and immunotherapies can affect the heart — causing heart failure, rhythm problems, pericardial disease or accelerated coronary disease — and people with an existing heart condition often need careful planning so that cancer treatment can proceed safely.

Cardio-oncology is the field that manages this, and Dr Yu is one of a small number of Australian cardiologists who hold the International Cardio-Oncology Society’s certification in it. He co-chairs the Society’s Cardiac Imaging Working Group and sits on the editorial boards of European Heart Journal: Cardio-Oncology and Heart, Lung and Circulation.

In practice this means a GP, oncologist or haematologist can refer a patient for:

  • Cardiac assessment before cancer treatment starts, particularly where there is existing heart disease or a higher-risk cancer regimen
  • Monitoring during treatment, using advanced cardiac imaging to pick up early changes
  • Follow-up after treatment as the risk of cardiovascular disease in cancer survivors is increased.

Advanced and precise cardiac imaging

Dr Yu has advanced training in echocardiography, CT coronary angiography and Cardiac MRI. Having all three in one clinician means the appropriate test can be chosen to answer the clinical question and a diagnosis may be reached with fewer investigations.

General cardiology too

Beyond his subspecialty areas, Dr Yu sees the full range of adult cardiac problems — chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations, high blood pressure, cholesterol, heart failure and valve disease — and takes referrals for preventative cardiology, risk assessment and pre-operative assessments.
